We’re excited to announce one of downtown Kansas City’s most stunning buildings will soon see new life. We have partnered with Augustine Development Group to pursue a $50 million redevelopment of the Scarritt Building and Arcade that will convert it into a 193-room hotel by Wyndham Grand.
Built in 1907, the Scarritt is both a downtown Kansas City icon and an enduring example of the Chicago School architectural style. The building features an exterior defined by terra cotta ornamentation and an interior bathed in natural sunlight. After years of near-vacancy, we knew it was time to restore this historic complex and create a new destination for downtown visitors.
The project will be largely funded with federal and state historic tax credits. Our current plans for the building include the Wyndham Grand hotel, two full-service restaurants and a rooftop bar with some of the best views you’ll find in downtown Kansas City. We’re also designating 20,000 square feet as co-working space, where local professionals may drop in and work for an afternoon.
The Scarritt Building will be the latest addition to Sunflower’s portfolio of hotel development in Kansas City. Over the last few years, we’ve completed development on the Ambassador Hotel on Grand, the Hilton Home2 on Main and the La Quinta in Beacon Hill. We’re excited to break ground on this brand new place for visitors to experience our home city.
